As a professional society the NPAG is young. Its members however are experienced and very senior having served the Dutch Psychoanalytic Society (NVPA) for many years as training-analysts, supervisors and council and committee-members. It was discontent with the analytic climate in the Dutch Psychoanalytic Society (NVPA) and the way the it set about to merge training in psychoanalysis with training for analytic psychotherapists ,that resulted in 16 analysts to establish on January 2, 2005 the NPAG. Presently the NPAG counts about 24 members and 12 candidates. Since July 2005 the NPAG has been recognised as a Provisional Society of the International Psychoanalytic Association. In September 2005 the first seminar course student group has started.
